I gotta get this off my chest... (Oct-05-05)

To make up for being out of touch for a while, I
want to get something off my chest.

-> Something that could greatly help you out.

I was in the gym a few weeks ago and - as often
happens when I'm at the gym - I got pulled up by
the head instructor and asked to give a couple of
guys a run-down on proper squatting technique.

Fair enough.

This happens *regularly* where I train and work
with clients. This same trainer pulls me up to
correct some poor fool who is have knee problems,
a terribly sore back, and/or making no gains in
his squat.

So, I thought what I have to say to these people
would help you.

First things first.

Most athletes realize the squat is important to
any sort of consistent gains. But other than guys
like you and me who are hell-bent on increasing
vertical leap, very, very few people actually
have the balls to squat regularly, or with any
kind of effect or results.

Generally an athlete will squat with much more
success than a regular person will and there is
only one reason for this:

-> Athletes legs are conditioned to carrying heavy loads.

So, initially, I try to get the person to squat
like an athlete.

Here's a list of 3 'un-heard' tips to send your
squat through the roof...

-1-> Squat Through Your Heels
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

The first and perhaps most subtle point
for improving your squat is how you
choose to focus the lift.

Many athletes are focused on *raising*
the weight, and this encourages a slight
forward tilt, bringing the quads and
calves much more into play.

This is *not* how you want to emphasise
the lift.

Instead, you should focus on driving the
back of the heel through the ground. The
idea is that you are trying to break
through the ground (pushing downwards),
as opposed to driving upwards.

As I said, it's a very subtle thing, but
it will make sure you don't go too far
forward and compromise your knees and it
will also help to ensure your glutes do
more of the work... which, in turn, makes
gains faster, your training safer...

-> And your vertical leap *much* higher!

Go and try it today, because tomorrow I'm going
to e-mail you the second tip.

Look for it tomorrow!
